Crafting Through the Apocalypse.

Crafting Through the Apocalypse.

In times of crisis, inside your head or in the outside world, stress and anxiety can often be debilitating. The uncertainty can be overwhelming, leaving us yearning for stability and control. For as long as I can remember, crafting has emerged as a surprisingly powerful way to find solace. Over the course of the last week during the ongoing LA Fires, I have completed no less than two knit hoodies and sewn 6 fabric tote bags.

Crafting as a Form of Mindfulness

One of the most profound benefits of crafting is the ability to anchor us in the present moment. Engaging in a creative activity requires focus and attention to detail. The rhythmic motion of knitting needles or the careful strokes of a paintbrush can shift our thoughts away from worry, guiding us into a state of mindfulness. By immersing ourselves in the task at hand, we create a mental refuge where stress has no foothold. Conversely, I have also gone far to the other side of the spectrum and ended up disassociating while knitting and gotten completely stuck, but that’s another blog post.

When dealing with a difficult problem at work, I often will pick up a simple project and knit for a few minutes to help me think about a possible solution. Early on in sobriety I also realized that if my hands were busy, my head tended to quiet down and I was able to focus.

A Tangible Sense of Achievement

In a crisis, when so much feels out of our control, completing a craft project can provide a much-needed sense of accomplishment. Holding a finished piece—whether it’s a crocheted blanket or a watercolor painting—is a physical reminder that we are capable of creating something beautiful, even during challenging times. These tangible results can foster resilience and boost self-esteem.

Building Connections Through Creativity

Crafting doesn’t have to be a solitary pursuit and I believe that creativity doesn’t happen in a vacuum. Many people find comfort in joining crafting communities, whether online or in person. Sharing ideas, projects, and encouragement with others can create a sense of belonging, which is especially important during times of isolation. Virtual crafting meetups and social media groups dedicated to creative hobbies have become lifelines for many seeking connection during difficult periods.

Crafting as a Tool for Emotional Expression

Crises often stir complex emotions, from grief and anger to hope and love. Crafting provides a nonverbal outlet for these feelings. Painting, for example, allows us to express emotions through color and texture, while journaling can help us process thoughts and memories through words and illustrations. These creative expressions can be profoundly healing, offering clarity and catharsis.

Affordable and Accessible Options

One of the most appealing aspects of crafting is its accessibility. You don’t need to be a professional artist or invest in expensive materials to reap the benefits. Everyday items like paper, yarn, or recycled materials can spark creativity. Simple projects, such as making homemade cards or folding origami, can be just as therapeutic as more elaborate undertakings. Knitting generally has a higher cost to get started, which is why I have started to develop DIY kits using recycled materials.

Practical Tips for Getting Started

If you’re new to crafting or looking to explore a new creative outlet, here are some tips to get started:

  1. Choose a small, simple project to start.

  2. Start Small: Begin with simple projects to build confidence and avoid feeling overwhelmed.

  3. Set Aside Dedicated Time: Schedule regular crafting sessions to make it a consistent part of your routine.

  4. Embrace Imperfection: Remember, the goal is not perfection but the joy and calm that come with creating.

  5. Join a Community: Look for local workshops or online groups to connect with fellow crafters.

Conclusion

In moments of crisis, crafting offers more than just a distraction; it’s a pathway to healing, growth, and connection. By engaging our hands and hearts in creative pursuits, we can find moments of peace and purpose amidst the chaos. So, pick up a paintbrush, thread a needle, or grab some clay—and let crafting guide you to calm.
